What Is Pediatric ABA Therapy?
ABA is an evidence-based approach to how children learn. Therapists break skills into small, teachable steps and use positive reinforcement to build communication, social, and daily living skills. They also look at the purpose behind challenging behaviors and teach safer ways for your child to get what they need. For young children, sessions look a lot like play.

After a behavioral assessment, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) designs a plan with you that may include the following services.
Rather than simply stopping a disruptive or unsafe behavior, our therapists identify what your child is trying to accomplish and teach a replacement skill, usually a way to communicate, that meets the same need.
Functional communication training gives your child a reliable way to ask for help, request a break, or say what they want, using:
- Spoken words and phrases
- Sign language or gestures
- Picture exchange systems
- Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
Independence starts with everyday routines. We teach dressing, tooth brushing, using utensils, and toilet training into small steps your child can master, and you can keep practicing at home.
Our school readiness program prepares young children for preschool and kindergarten. Kids practice the parts of a school day that can be more challenging for many of them up: following group directions, moving from one activity to the next, sitting through circle time, playing cooperatively with classmates, and handling snack and bathroom routines. By the first day of school, none of it feels new.
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) works one-on-one with your child, with a BCBA supervising the plan. Sessions happen at our Mesa or Surprise clinic, at your home, or out in the community, depending on your child’s goals and what insurance authorizes.
Parents are the most important members of the team. Your BCBA meets with you regularly to review progress and coach you on the same strategies used in session, including:
- Check-ins on your priorities and changes at home or school
- Plain-language explanations of the techniques your child’s team is using
- Hands-on practice so skills carry over between sessions
Other Services
While ABA is not an AzEIP service, children under 3 may separately qualify for early intervention through AzEIP, including services such as speech, occupational, and physical therapy.
For children 3 and up, many families pair ABA with other therapies through our Therapy for Developmental Disabilities (TDD) clinics.
